What’s in the area?

You’ll find the Borders far more peaceful than the busy tourist-congested Lake District!  Below are some possibilities to start you off.

One of the best and most intact stretches of Hadrian's Wall is approx. 40 mins drive away at Haltwhistle.

Explore the border towns and villages to the north – Canonbie, Langholm, Newcastleton Hermitage, and beyond to Kielder Forest with its walks, reservoir and visitor centre. Also good for biking and orienteering.

Gretna Green is just 6 miles down the road, (be careful who you go with!)

The rugged, remote fells and moors of the ‘Debatable Lands’ can still be experienced up valleys such as Eskdalemuir with its large buddhist centre, and visit the small town of Moffat for some of their famous toffee. Further on is the Grey Mares Tail – tallest waterfall in Scotland

You are accessible for the Cumbrian and Scottish coasts of the Solway Firth, with its marshes important for birdlife. The county of Dumfries and Galloway is within easy driving distance, to explore its rocky and sandy shores,

Carlisle is only 20 minutes away. Now in England, the large sandstone castle was fought over for many years and constantly swapped hands between the English and Scots. Tullie House museum tells the story of ‘The Reivers’ of the Border Lands.

The Border Esk is a renowned salmon and sea trout river and some of the best pools are within easy striking distance. The River Liddle also offers opportunities.

Local history will be of particular interest to visitors with the surnames, Graham, Armstrong, Elliot, Kerr, Forster, Nixon, Noble, Routledge or many others listed on the Local History page.

More opportunities for eating out, walking, horse riding, cycling, arts & crafts and local history can be accessed via the links on the right hand side of this page
